Boy, 12, beats UK chess master
Published on Aug 3, 2004
In the British Club, every player was staring across his or her chess table at the British Grand
Master. He made a move on the first board, and left to visit the next 29, making a round circuit of
all 30 of his opponents, one move at time.
Against all odds in this 30 to 1 scenario, only two local players managed to beat Grand Master Nigel
Short. And against all odds, one of them was 12-year-old Parinpat Angsuwarangsee.
Parinpat used skills he developed playing chess as a childhood hobby to seize an improbable triumph
last Wednesday at the British Club on Surawong Rd.
"It is a good beginning," Parinpat said, after his victory at the simultaneous chess
exhibition organised by the Bangkok Chess Club, sponsored by Agora Consulting.
"Perhaps I was the weakest player in the exhibition. He may have been concentrating too much on
the other players," said Parinpat, who now studies in Mathayom 1 (Grade 7) at Chulalongkorn
University Demonstration School in Bangkok.
Short, 39, is ranked 21st in the July 2004 ratings of the world s top chess players and ranked
second in England, according to the World Chess Federation.
He bested most of 14 Thais and 16 expats he faced along a U-shaped table, but not the first
contestant in the line up: Parinpat.
Although Short never talked with Parinpat, the Grand Master said later the youth made a dubious
opening followed with a proper plan of attack.
Short said that Parinpat could gain more experience and improve his skills by reading chess books
and playing chess on the Internet.
Parinpat said his win was a fluke.
He started learning the game when he was 4 years old. Two years later, when the family moved to
Vancouver, Canada, so his father could further his epidemiology studies, Parinpat began practising
the game to kill time.
He won a title in the first-graders category of the Vancouver Chess Challenge in 1999.
He also represented British Columbia in a junior chess contest against chess players from Washington
state.
But Parinpat s relationship with chess was interrupted when his family returned to Bangkok. He
started third grade at Chulalong-korn University Demonstration School where his strategic skills
were converted to Thai chess.
For the last few years, Parinpat has represented Chulalongkorn in Thai chess competitions at sports
contests among local demonstration schools.
The 12-year-old regards chess as a hobby and wants to focus on studying so he can pursue his dream
of becoming an engineer or doctor.

ข่าวดีคือทาง British Club ได้คุยกับ Short
BCC Open ...
