The Algerian doctor Tarik Azmy and his wife Maya, an art director at a magazine, have a cute son,
Karim. The happy days of the family come to an end when two German FBI men enter Mayas office and
interrogate her about her husband. He was filmed at the wedding of one of the 9/11 hijackers, so he
could be a sleeper, a hidden terrorist. Maya doesnt believe this accusation, but when Tariks old
friend Reza arrives suddenly from Iran, she begins to feel uncomfortable, especially as she
discovers Tarik hides things from her, so as not to burden her, he claims. Matters get even more
complicated when the Ebola virus is discovered in his laboratory.

DIRECTORS PROFILE
Born in 1962 in Khoramabad, Parviz SHAHBAZI is a graduate of "filmmaking" from Teheran's
IRIB College of Radio & Television. During the early 80s he began writing short stories and
directing short films. His debut feature film, <Traveller from the South> (1996) as well as
second film, <Whispers> (2000) went to countless festivals and brought him international
recognition, collecting several prizes along the way. In 2002, his third film, <Deep Breath>
was shown at the Directors' Fortnight at Cannes to great success. Among other accolades it won a
FIPRESCI award at Pusan and the Jury special award at Turin as well as the Best Film award at the
Belgrade Author Festival.
SYNOPSIS
The thirty-year old Behzad, one of Irans chess masters, is promised a two-thousand dollar cash
prize and a ten-year reduction on his prison term if he wins first place at the Asian Chess
Competition held in Teheran. Behzad asks for his two young children, whom he has never allowed to
visit him in prison, to attend the games. During the three-day competition, Behzad, who is
continuously under surveillance, spends every free moment with his kids. As long as his kids are
with him, he is in top form but on the third day when the childrens uncle comes to take them away,
Behzad loses his concentration and fails to win. He runs away. After he spends a few frenzied hours
in Teheran trying in vain to get in touch with his wife but finding two of his chess pen-pals, he
returns to the prison house outside of Teheran.
